Weekly Update: Art Colloquium, MEN'S GROUP & Deaconship
In August of 2016, a group of leaders at The Painted Door gathered for a two-day discussion on what aspects of the church required new focus or attention to ensure fruitful ministry in the years ahead. During that meeting, the elders recognized our need for help in the area of organizational leadership. And so began a process of considering how we might raise up and empower people skilled in that area to serve as ordained deacons.
For the past nine months now, we have worked to draft and redraft changes to our bylaws that would add the role of ordained deacon to our church's governance structure. Thanks to many helpful contributions from members at our church and consultation with pastors from other churches, the elders believe we have arrived at a final draft of the bylaws that is simple, biblical, and reflective of our need for help in organizational leadership.
In short, these proposed bylaws stipulate that the elders may ordain qualified men or women to serve as deacons in our church. These deacons would work in cooperation with the elders on matters such as hiring and firing, personnel performance reviews, budgeting and bookkeeping, church facilities management, etc. The deacons and elders would make decisions on these fronts in concert, sitting together around a single table and each possessing an equal voice and equal vote.
To adopt these bylaws officially requires that our church's members approve them. And so we are bringing them before you all today to provide time for vetting and discussion before the member vote. Please read through the proposed bylaws linked below and note any questions or concerns you may have. We plan to address those during our April 29 members meeting, after which we will vote on whether to approve these changes.
The prospect of our church benefiting from the leadership gifts of those called to serve as deacons here is exciting. The elders are proposing these bylaws changes because we believe they will be good for our congregation. And we are hopeful that all of you might come to that same conclusion as we process the proposal together.

THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE:
2 Kings 4:18-37
Pastor Mark Bergin
The modern world tells us that doubt is more authentic than faith. That uncertainty is the noblest disposition. Yet God would lead us to the ignoble place of desperation, where we have no choice but to cast ourselves fully onto his mercy. The story of a mother grieving the loss of her only son is our story, everyone of us. We are all that desperate, all in that much need of a miracle. And embarrassing as it may be to put all our hope in the power of Jesus, there is life to be had there. Desperate, risky faith will never be in fashion. It’s too pathetic, too weak, too irrational. But grieving mothers care little for fashion. Just give us life, Lord.
