Weekly Update: Incarnation Class, Bylaws Update & Youth Cohort
The vote is in! By a tally of 71-0, our church's proposed bylaws changes have passed. (If you're out of the loop, we held a Members Meeting on Sunday, April 29th where members voted on these proposed bylaws changes.) So just what does that mean? Here is brief play-by-play of how we plan to move forward from here and how this will impact our governance structure.
- STEP 1 -- FINALIZE DEACON CANDIDACY PROCESS The new bylaws include the office of deacon in our governance structure. The process for becoming a deacon at The Painted Door will assess a given candidate's fitness for the office in areas such as spiritual vitality, gospel understanding, service orientation, organizational giftedness, etc. The elders will oversee this assessment over a period of several months and will solicit input from the members before making the final decision on whether to ordain a person for the role.
- STEP 2 -- INITIATE DEACON CANDIDACY PROCESS: At present, Erin Bourne and Ian Cull are occupying important organizational roles and have expressed willingness to serve as deacons in our church. Erin is our Volunteer Director, overseeing care, scheduling, and development of our many service teams. Ian is our Finance Director, overseeing our books and budget. Both roles require a high level of trustworthiness, competence, and maturity. And the elders believe that leading Erin and Ian through the deacon candidacy will confirm that each of them possess these traits.
- STEP 3 -- ORDAIN NEW DEACONS: If the deacon candidacy process affirms qualification, we will ordain deacons to serve in our church. This ordination will empower the deacons to join the elders as equal voting members in matters of organizational leadership, such as budgeting, facilities decisions, bylaws management, etc.
Thank you to the members for approving this addition to our governance structure. And many thanks to our good God for providing people who seem fit to serve as deacons. The elders are believe that this change will improve our capacity and ability to lead The Painted Door well in the years ahead.

THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE:
THE GIVEN LIFE
Pastor Mark Bergin
Take life by the horns. Seize the moment. Life is what you make of it. These are the maxims of rugged individualists. They are declarations of independence. Yet for all our will and grit, the life we forge for ourselves is perilously feeble. We spend decades erecting towers that can topple in minutes. We take great care to steer ourselves around pain, only to find that the road is made of it. We build walls and lock doors to protect ourselves and then fall out a window to our death. As it turns out, we are not the author of our story but characters within it. The only life we have is the one given. And all our taking and seizing and making is mere distraction from the single act meant to define us: Receive.
