The Psalter of Jesus: An Awkward Celebration // Psalm 66

Don’t matter how much money you got, there’s only two kinds of people: there’s saved people and there’s lost people.
— Bob Dylan

God in Christ has declared all things new and we believe Him, but all we know of this is an inner whisper. At the moment, the evidence is severely lacking. Hope and change continue to slip back into perversion and violence. The formation of faith, hope, and love do not bring the personal glory we had hoped, but cut us open to know the sufferings of our Christ. Is He worth it? Yes! So in unfulfilled longing, rejoice. Every promise will be fulfilled and every tear wiped away.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Our God rescues the lost and establishes their feet on solid ground.
Let those found by the Lord say so.
Let us give thanks to the Lord for His unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind.

Our God saves sinners and delivers them from their own destruction.
Let those humbled by the Lord say so.
Let us give thanks to the Lord for His unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind.

Our God meets people in their frailty and gives them new life.
Let those redeemed by the Lord say so.
Let us give thanks to the Lord for His unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind.

He gives ear to our cries and listens to our affliction.
He turns the desert into pools of water and the parched ground into flowing springs.
He is Lord over exaltation and ruin, He is Lord over famine and feast.
Let us ponder the loving works of the Lord. He is our light and salvation.

He has not rejected our prayers or withheld His love from us.
Though we deny Him, He has preserved our lives.
Let us ponder the loving works of the Lord. He is our light and salvation.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Had the Lord not been on our side, there would be no rescue.
He made the Israelites pass through waters on foot.
He stilled storms to a whisper.
He cut through prison gates.
But we doubt his power and intentions with us.
Forgive us, Lord. Teach us to see your kindness.

Had the Lord not been on our side, there would be no freedom.
He lifts the needy out of their affliction.
He removes the yoke of shame and guilt.
He covers sinners in his righteousness.
But we seek our own way and self-medication.
Forgive us, Lord. Teach us to trust your kindness.

Had the Lord not been on our side, there would be no abundance.
He set aside glory to take on flesh.
For the joy before him, he endured the cross.
He conquered death and established newness of life.
But we often think we deserve more than we have.
We struggle to reconcile God’s goodness with our suffering.
Forgive us, Lord. Teach us to hope in your kindness.

Our Father, help us believe that our salvation does not depend on our effort or intellect or repentance. You have rescued us, and will continually rescue us.
Praise be to God for his steadfast love. He gives and takes away according to his lovingkindness.

Forgive us for wanting to be pacified instead of rescued in full.
Help us to walk through death and darkness, trusting you to bring life.
Have mercy on us Lord.  Make us people who proclaim your kindness.

Though we do not know the ways of the Lord, he is our good Shepherd.
He will insist on his life for us.
Praise be to God for his steadfast love. He gives and takes away according to his lovingkindness.
