NEWS & NOTES
Almost five years ago now, a tall and bright young woman approached me after church for prayer. She was dating someone and looking for guidance as their relationship moved toward discussions of marriage. Not long after, I was meeting with the newly engaged couple in my office. Turns out, he was rather tall and quite bright also.
I got to know Zack and Delaney Van Der Weide well in the months that followed leading up to their wedding in June of 2015. And it is was a pleasure to perform the ceremony and then journey with them as fellow members of the same community group for a year thereafter.
Then geography spoiled everything. The Van Der Weides moved further south into Indiana and commuter church simply didn't work. We said goodbye.
Fast forward to this past September, Zack sent me a text to say that he and Delaney and their infant son Declan had figured out a way to vanquish our geographic enemy. They were moving to Chicago!
The happy return of these friends coincided with our need for a new children's ministry director. And Delaney's familiarity with our church combined with her experience in children's ministry and need for part-time employment all added up to us making a hire this month.
Kaitlyn will be training Delaney throughout December and then handing off the role in the new year. If you haven't already, be sure to thank Kaitlyn for her great work as director these past three years. And though she's not exactly new to our church, let's welcome Delaney!
THIS COMING SUNDAY
SENT TO LOVE: LOVE OF NEIGHBOR
1 John 4:7-12
Pastor Mark Bergin
Jesus came into the world full of love for the Jewish people. They were his people, his family. Yet that love in him could not be restrained to a particular tribe; it bloomed into a love for all peoples. Jesus loved his neighbor -- that is, people who lived beyond his own familial confines. People from across the tracks, across the ethnic, social, and economic dividing walls of his time. He loved Romans and Greeks, slaves and governors, women and children, and even Samaritans. Especially Samaritans. Who are the Samaritans in our time, and in our particular lives? Whoever they may be, we cannot and will not even see them, nevermind love them, until the love of Jesus blooms in us.
