Q19. IN WHAT WAYS DOES THE LAW OF GOD REQUIRE THAT WE LOVE PEOPLE?
A. Honor your father and mother. Do not murder. Do not commit adultery. Do not steal. Do not speak lies about other people. Do not covet what other people have.
Q20. WHY HAS GOD GIVEN US THESE COMMANDS?
A. The Ten Commandments show us how wonderful God is. They show us how he loves others and how we must love others if we want to be friends with God. These commands are to be obeyed perfectly. Rev. 21:1-7, Rev. 1:8, Ps. 19:7-11, Matt. 5:20-48, Deut. 11:13-21, Gal. 3:10-12
Q21. WHO HAS DISOBEYED THESE COMMANDS?
A. All people have disobeyed God. Ever since he gave us his law, we have been able to see that we are not obedient children. Not one of us is good. Rom. 5:12-13, Rom. 7:7-13, Rom. 3:10-20
Q22. WHAT HAPPENS TO PEOPLE WHO DISOBEY GOD’S COMMANDS?
A. When we disobey God, we run away from his life and run towards death. God is the only one who has life for us. He is the one who made us and protects us. To disobey him is to choose death. John 1:1-4, Rom. 6:20-23, Ps. 36: 7-12, John 3:36
Q23. IF WE HAVE DISOBEYED, HOW CAN WE ESCAPE DEATH?
A. We have a savior in Jesus to rescue us from disobedience and death. He has come to be with us in our broken places and to heal us through his life and death. When we trust Jesus to save us, we receive his life of obedience as our own. We become one with Jesus through his Spirit. Ezek. 36:25-27, Heb. 10:15-22, Rom. 3:21, Rom. 8:1-4, Heb. 10:10-14, Ga. 5:22-25, John 15:1-5
Q24. CAN WE OBEY THESE COMMANDS?
A. God promised to give us an obedience that we couldn’t make on our own. And he kept his promise in Jesus, who is our obedience for us. We can trust Jesus to give us his perfect life. We can trust him to live out his perfect life through the Holy Spirit in us. Because of Jesus, obeying God is not up to us anymore. John 10:17-18, Heb. 12:2, Luke 22:42, John 3:16-17
Q25. HOW DOES JESUS TEACH US TO PRAY?
A. “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”
Q26. WHY DO WE CALL GOD OUR FATHER?
A. God is the father of all things, and all people are his children. But we have run away from him through our sin and lost the right to call him father. Still, he chases after us. He sent Jesus to gather up the runaway children. And he sent the Holy Spirit to connect those runaways to Jesus, so that they would be adopted back into God’s family and call him Father forever. 1 Cor. 8:5-6, Acts 17:28-29, Eph. 4:4-6, Mal. 2:10, 1 John 3:1, 9-10, Ga. 4:4-7, Rom. 8:14-17
Q27. WHY IS THE NAME OF GOD HOLY?
A. No one is as strong or as beautiful as God. There is no one like him. So his name in all its forms--YHWH, Yeshua, Jesus--is above every other name. Ps. 96:2-10, Isa. 42:8, Ps. 29:1-2, Jer. 10:6-7, Phil. 2:5-11
Q28. WHAT IS THE KINGDOM OF GOD?
A. The kingdom of God is where Jesus is king. And where Jesus is king, goodness is for all peoples. Every other kingdom will come under King Jesus. He is the only king who will rule forever. Q29. HOW DOES THE KINGDOM OF GOD COME TO THE EARTH?
A. Jesus came to the earth to bring God’s kingdom to us, and he returned back to his father to finish the job. The kingdom of God now grows all around us and even in us. We don’t know where it will grow next, and we can’t help it grow any faster. But we can look for it, enjoy it, and rest in it. John 10:17-18, Heb. 12:2, Luke 22:42, John 3:16-17
Q30. IN WHAT WAYS DOES GOD TAKE CARE OF HIS CHILDREN?
A. God gives every good thing to his children, filling all of our needs in Jesus. God is the giver of life, the one who made us and protects us. He has filled the world with food and everything we need for life. And he will protect us forever, even when we die, by letting us share in his life through Jesus. Ps. 84-11, Phil. 4:19, Ps. 36:7-9, Gen. 2:7, Gen. 1:29-30, Luke 12:22-30, Matt 6:25-33, 2 Pet. 1:3-4, Eph. 1:3-10
Q31. WHAT DO WE OWE TO GOD?
A. God has given us life, and we have used it to run towards death. Our sin is against him. We have rejected his life and owe a debt that can only be paid in death. 1 Tim. 6:13-14, Gal. 6:7-8, Ps. 51:3-4, Rom. 6:23
Q32. WHILL GOD FORGIVE ALL OF OUR DEBTS?
A. God sent his Son to take away the sins of the world. Jesus took away the debt of death that we owed. He paid our debts with his life and death, buying us back from our slavery to sin and death. John 1:29, Col. 2:13-14, Heb. 10:10-14, 1 Cor. 6:19-20, 1 Cor. 7:22-23, Rom. 6:17-18
Q33. HOW CAN WE FORGIVE OTHERS?
A. We can forgive others only with the forgiveness of Jesus. We have no forgiveness of our own making but only what Jesus has given us. When we don’t forgive, we reject the forgiveness of God altogether. Col. 3:12-13, Eph. 4:32, Luke 7:41-50, Matt. 6:14-15, Mark 11:25
Q34. WHY DOES GOD ALLOW HIS CHILDREN TO BE TEMPTED?
A. God allows his children to be tempted so we will see how much we need him. Temptation is not for us to prove our goodness to God, but for him to prove his goodness to us. Whether we resist or give in, he comes to be with us. Jesus knows every temptation and has become every sin, and he has beaten it all for us. 2 Cor. 12:7-9, Rom. 5:20-21, 1 Cor. 10:12-13, 2 Tim. 2:11-13, Heb. 2:14-18, Heb. 4:15, 2 Cor. 5:21, Isa. 53:4-12
Q35. WHAT IS EVIL, AND HOW DOES GO RESCUE US FROM IT?
A. Evil is anything that looks for life without God. There is no life without God, death. So evil is a lie, a fake sort of life. But Jesus came to rescue us with the truth. He came to show us the lie of evil and teach us that the only way of life is with God. Gen. 3:17-19, John 15:6, Rom. 1:18-25, John 8:31, John 14:6-7, John 10:10-11, Rom. 6:9-10, John 17:20-21
